The Penn State Alumni Association

What’s been happening:

Forty-five years ago, President Eric Walker said of students at an orientation speech that they will remember their years at Penn State as the best years of their lives. At that time, nose buried in textbooks, fingers lightly caressing a slide rule, I, an engineering student who trudged to classes after pulling all nighters, scoffed. Best years indeed! As I recently tried to resurrect and reconstruct long forgotten memories, I saw that my college days were a very special time in my life, and they were, in fact, never bested or duplicated. My only regret is that I wasn't more like the stereotypical college student. I didn't dress like the typical college student, and I rarely took part in college activities. In four years, I attended only one spring break carnival, four football games, and one pep rally. I ignored the spring break parades and homecoming activities. I didn't even join the panty raid. But I did participate in a few activities. I frequented the creamery, studied in Pattee Library, danced at West Halls record hops, and in the very first bar of my only bar hopping evening, I barfed all over the food counter. Maybe it's all for the best. If I had acted like a BMOC, I probably would still be living in West Halls trying to graduate. So, yes, my years at Penn State are the best years of my life.
